After four decades of lobbying for a national day to recognize the service of teacher, Congress declared March 7, 1980 as National Teacher Day and only for that year.
In 1985, the PTA and the NEA established Teacher appreciation week as it is now recognized -- the first full week of May
The state of Massachusetts recognizes the first Sunday of June as its their state's Teachers Day.
Our experience has been that some schools miss the traditional Teacher Appreciation Day and make up for it by presenting a gift item to the school staff later in the month.
